Stigmatized Illnesses
2017
This body of work
focusses on my personal
struggle with mental illness.
In particular, these images
explore the burdens of having
disorders deemed more unsavory
by society, such as the
internalization of stigma and
managing symptoms more
complicated than garden
variety morose. The
photographs are for the most
part sterile, but always connected
to my life, or me as a person.
This helps remind the viewer
that people with these struggles
are in fact, still people, and have
a greater humanity that is more
than a list of symptoms in the
DSM-V, and much more than
a dehumanized monster created
by those who are fearful of us.

Gender Presentation
2017
This body of work deals with
gender identity through images
of myself trying on different articles
of clothing and posing based on
the identity that each outfit
compelled me to present as.
The photographs were shot in
a plain studio and displayed
in sets of four, to
emphasize the narrative
progression of the photoshoot
as I allowed myself to fully
respond to my appearance. I
chose a variety of outfits,
including some that I would
never wear publicly due to
physical and social dysphoria.
My body language
communicates to the viewer
which dispositions align more
comfortably with the way I
want to present myself to the
world. To me, the power of this
body of work is the confirmation
that the way I look has a profound
impact on my state of mind, and
any attempt todismiss it as
“superficial” would be useless.
